R-22, R-410A and the New Refrigerants: What Miami Homeowners Should Know in 2026

Refrigerant is the substance your AC uses to move heat out of your house. Over the last few years, the rules about which refrigerants can be used in new equipment have changed, and many Miami homeowners are not sure what that means for the system they already have. Here is the plain-English version.

If Your AC Uses R-22 (Older Systems)

R-22 was the standard refrigerant in older systems, and production of new R-22 for the U.S. ended in 2020. Your R-22 system is not illegal to run, but if it develops a leak, the refrigerant available for repairs is limited and getting harder to find. If your system is old and runs on R-22, it is worth planning your replacement before it fails in the middle of summer, instead of making a rushed decision in an emergency.

If Your AC Uses R-410A (Most Systems From the Last 15 Years)

R-410A replaced R-22 and is in most systems installed over the past 15 years. Under federal rules, new residential AC systems are no longer manufactured with R-410A, and newer systems use lower-impact refrigerants. Your R-410A system can still be serviced and repaired. In 2026 the EPA also confirmed that R-410A equipment that was already manufactured can still be installed, so there is no need to panic or replace a healthy system.

What This Means for You

  • A working system does not need to be replaced just because of the refrigerant it uses
  • Low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere. Topping it off without finding the leak usually means paying for the same problem again
  • If your system is old, leaking, and needs a major repair, that is the moment to compare repair and replacement honestly
  • New systems use different refrigerants and parts, so the indoor and outdoor units must be matched correctly

How We Handle It

Our technicians are EPA-certified to work with refrigerants. We check what your system uses, look for the cause of any leak, and explain your options before any work starts.
