If part of your house never cools, you’re adding a room, or your old system is near the end, you’ll hear two options: a ductless mini-split or a central AC system. Both work well in South Florida. The right one depends on your layout, your ducts and how you use the space.

How each one works

A central AC system has one outdoor unit and one indoor air handler. Cold air travels through ductwork to vents in every room, and one thermostat controls the whole house.

A ductless mini-split also has an outdoor unit, but it connects through a small line set to one or more indoor heads mounted on the wall or ceiling. Each head cools its own room and has its own controls. There is no ductwork.

When central AC makes more sense

  • You already have ductwork in good condition, so replacing the equipment is the simplest path.
  • You want even cooling across the whole house from one thermostat.
  • You prefer no units visible on the walls.

If your ducts are old, crushed or leaking, a new central system won’t deliver what you paid for. In that case we inspect the ducts and quote duct replacement together with the AC installation.

When a mini-split makes more sense

  • A garage conversion, addition, home office or efficiency that the existing ducts never reached.
  • One room that stays hot no matter what the main system does.
  • Older homes or condos with no room to run new ductwork.
  • You want to cool only the rooms you’re using and set each one separately.

Humidity matters in Miami

Here, comfort is as much about removing moisture as lowering the temperature. Any system that is too big for the space cools fast, shuts off and leaves the air clammy. Correct sizing matters more than the type of system. Before we recommend anything, we look at the size of the space, sun exposure, windows and insulation.

Can you combine them?

Yes, and it’s common. Many Miami homes keep central AC for the main living areas and add a mini-split for a converted garage or a hot upstairs room. That is often simpler than extending ductwork to a space it was never designed for.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. What condition are my existing ducts in?
  2. Which rooms are the problem, and why?
  3. How is the system sized for this space?
  4. What warranty comes with the installation?

Not sure which one you need?

We’ll come out, look at the space and the existing system, and explain both options honestly.
