In Miami, most ductwork lives in a hot attic or above a dropped ceiling, sitting in heat and humidity all year. Over time it sags, splits, pulls apart at the joints and starts leaking cooled air into spaces you are not trying to cool. A new AC can’t fix that. When the ducts are the problem, replacing them is often what finally brings comfort back and lowers the electric bill.
Here are the signs we look for when we inspect ductwork in Miami homes and businesses.
If the living room is comfortable but a bedroom at the end of the house stays warm, the air is likely being lost before it gets there. Crushed, kinked or disconnected duct runs are a common cause, especially in older homes where the ducts have been stepped on or shifted over the years.
Leaky ducts force the AC to run longer to reach the temperature on the thermostat. If your usage has climbed and the system itself has been checked, the ductwork is the next place to look.
Flexible ducts in a Miami attic don’t last forever. Heat breaks down the outer jacket and insulation, and older ducts can become brittle. If your ductwork is original to an older home, or you can see torn jackets, sagging runs or patched sections held together with tape, it is worth having it evaluated.
When cold ducts lose their insulation in a humid attic, they sweat. That moisture can drip onto ceilings, leave stains and create musty odors. Damaged insulation and condensation are strong signs the ductwork needs to be replaced, not just patched.
Torn or disconnected ducts can pull dusty attic air into the system and blow it into your home. If you dust constantly and the filter is changed on schedule, leaky return ducts may be the reason.
Low airflow at the registers, whistling or rattling noises often point to undersized, restricted or poorly designed ducts. This is common after an AC replacement where a new system was connected to old ductwork that was never sized for it.
A new, efficient system connected to leaky, undersized ducts will not perform the way it should. When we replace an AC, we look at the ductwork too, so the whole system works together.
Not every duct problem means a full replacement. A single disconnected joint or one crushed run can often be repaired. When the damage is spread across the system, the insulation is breaking down, or the layout was never right for the home, replacement is usually the better long-term choice. We show you what we find and explain the options before any work starts. For more detail, see our guide on duct replacement vs. repair in Miami.
We work in English and Spanish (se habla español) and answer 24/7.
