South Florida summers are no joke. When temperatures push into the mid-90s and the humidity makes it feel even hotter, your air conditioner isn’t just a comfort — it’s a necessity. At BH Brothers Air Solutions, we’ve seen it all: AC units that break down on the hottest day of the year, systems that never got a spring tune-up, and homeowners left sweating in homes that should be cool.
Here’s the good news: most summer AC failures are 100% preventable. Follow these tips from our Miami HVAC technicians to keep your system running strong all summer long.
1. Schedule Your Annual AC Tune-Up Before the Heat Hits
The best time to service your AC is before you need it most. A professional tune-up includes a full system inspection, coil cleaning, refrigerant level check, filter replacement, and thermostat calibration. This single service call can extend your system’s life, lower your energy bill, and — most importantly — prevent a breakdown on a 95-degree afternoon.
We recommend scheduling your tune-up in early spring (April–May) before the rush. But even if you’re reading this in June or July, it’s not too late — call us and we’ll get you taken care of fast.
2. Change Your Air Filter Every 30–60 Days
A dirty air filter is the #1 cause of AC problems in South Florida. Here’s why: Florida’s high humidity and year-round pollen count mean your filter clogs up much faster than in other climates. A clogged filter forces your system to work harder, reduces airflow, and can even cause the evaporator coil to freeze — ironically causing your AC to stop cooling your home.
The fix is simple and cheap: check your filter monthly and replace it every 30–60 days during summer. Use a MERV 8 filter for a good balance between filtration and airflow.
3. Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clear
Your outdoor condenser unit needs airflow to do its job. Check around it regularly and clear away any debris, leaves, or overgrown plants. Keep at least 2 feet of clearance on all sides. Also, never stack anything against the unit or cover it while it’s running.
4. Set Your Thermostat Smart
Most Miami homeowners keep their thermostat at 72–74°F in summer. Avoid drastic temperature changes — set it to 78°F when away and 72–74°F when home. This can reduce energy use by 10–15% without sacrificing comfort.
5. Don’t Ignore Warning Signs
Your AC will usually give you warning signs before it fails. Watch out for: warm air from vents, unusual noises (banging, squealing), high indoor humidity, frequent on/off cycling, water leaks or ice on the unit, and a spike in your electric bill. If you notice any of these, don’t wait — call us today.
